This morning, RIM finally unveiled its next generation mobile operating system, BlackBerry OS 7. It's not a giant leap forward, but RIM is detailing a faster and easier-to-use OS that comes with an integrated, voice-enabled Universal Search system.

BlackBerry fans that have been frustrated by the operating system's chronically sluggish Web experience will be pleased to know that OS 7 offers a "significantly enhanced" browser with HTML5 video support and speed updates.

Interestingly, OS 7 won't have any legacy support, meaning that even the current generation Bold or Touch that you bought last year will be left behind -- you'll need to have one of RIM's brand new 9900 or 9930 devices to run it. SlashGear writes that according to RIM, "the reasoning behind the absent upgrades is that the new OS is so dependent on the hardware graphics capabilities of its new handsets."

RIM's new BlackBerry Balance application, though, will work on any device running OS 6.0 or later. First detailed in January, Balance is RIM's solution for combining both your personal and corporate accounts -- and all the security requirements that those require -- on a single device. For example, you can wipe all of the enterprise data from your phone, while still leaving the personal accounts intact. Or, social networking apps like Facebook and Twitter can be given limited access to anything from your corporate accounts.

BlackBerry OS 7 Features Announced--But It Won't Run On Older Devices originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 02 May 2011 10:47:00 EST.

Pop star Fergie talks about what she considers cheating,
Prior to reports that her husband Josh Duhamel had an affair with an Atlanta stripper, the singer opened up to The Advocate about her bisexuality and what that meant for her marriage. "I think women are beautiful, I’ve had a lot of fun with women, and I’m not ashamed of it. The problem is that I also love a well-endowed man," she told the publication. "But just because I enjoy women doesn’t mean I’m allowed to have affairs in my relationship. I learned through talking with my therapist that it is still cheating even if it’s with girls, so there is a rule there."
When asked if Fergie and Josh have ever made a sex tape, the singer responded, "No, that’s not happening. We’re too smart for that.

There's a load of great tech news happening out there every day, and, unfortunately, we just can't cover it all. Here are a few of the other noteworthy things we saw today on our never-ending journey through the wild, wild Web.

Justin Whitlock builds accurately detailed, miniature arcade cabinets, and he's promoting the $20 to $30 creations with photos that depict toy figurines hanging at the arcade. The toys look like they're really enjoying the tiny, realistic video games, but how are our original, '60s G.I. Joes supposed to play? Removing them from the original packaging would totally destroy their monetary value.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, known for his fastidious management of his own public image, may have posted a bit of historical fib on his Facebook profile. Earlier today, Sarkozy uploaded a photo of himself with Alain Juppé, former Prime Minister under Jacques Chirac, chipping away at the Berlin Wall with a pickax, exactly 20 years ago. He claims that (excuse our poor translation from the French) he left Paris for Berlin on the morning of November 9th, 1989, hearing reports that something was afoot in the blocs.

But at that time, Sarkozy was mayor of Neuilly-sur-Seine and the assistant general secretary for the right-wing political party RPR. Thus, his whereabouts are well-documented. According to council reports, Sarkozy was in Paris at a celebration marking the 19th anniversary of Charles de Gaulle's passing. Alain Juppé, himself, remarked today that he did not even arrive in Berlin until November 11th.Continue reading French Prez Sarkozy Revises History With Berlin Wall Facebook PicFiled under: Web, Social NetworkingFrench Prez Sarkozy Revises History With Berlin Wall Facebook Pic originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 09 Nov 2009 17:01:00 EST.
